I joined the Washington State University faculty as an extension information specialist in 1979. I write news about all aspects of the College of Agricultural, Human, and Natural Resource Sciences and WSU Extension and serve as a contact for reporters. I have had the opportunity to work a number of interesting stories over the years, including the eruptions of Mount St. Helens in 1980. I also had great fun writing about a banana-eating research moose named Morty, who wandered through the opening credits of the 1990-95 CBS-TV series “Northern Exposure.” Morty’s death in 1994, due to micro-nutrient deficiency, was reported from coast-to-coast and even made People magazine. When WSU animal scientists began crossing domestic cattle with Japanese Wagyu in the 80’s, I publicized the milestones. The study received coverage in the Wall Street Journal, the New York Times in the international media. A Japanese TV news crew even came to campus to do a report on the research. More recently, I have been involved in publicizing CAHNRS new organic agriculture major and the reintroduction of endangered pygmy rabbits in the shrub-steppe region of eastern Washington.

In addition to news and media relations, I coordinate production of Extension Today, a three-times-a-year tabloid insert in the university’s faculty-staff newspaper and oversee a Web database of brief reports on research, teaching and extension activities.

Before moving to Pullman, I worked in the public relations departments of the National Association of Realtors and Brunswick Corp., both in the Chicago area, and briefly as a general assignment reporter at the Sioux City Journal and Fort Dodge Messenger and Chronicle in Iowa. I grew up in Cedar Rapids, Iowa and earned two degrees in journalism at the University of Iowa.

On a personal note, I am married. My wife, Mary Anne, is an academic adviser in the School of Architecture andConstruction Management. Our home is ruled by two black cats. I collect programs from radio's Golden Age, American fountain pens, and a tired posterior from trying to write a mystery novel.
