WSU's Butler to Fill Henry Wallace Chair
PULLMAN, Wash. -- Washington State University's Lorna Michael Butler has been named as the first Henry A. Wallace Endowed Chair for Sustainable Agriculture at Iowa State University.
Butler is extension anthropologist and professor in the department of rural sociology at WSU--Puyallup.
"I am delighted by the recognition given to Dr. Lorna Butler in her selection for the Henry A. Wallace Endowed Chair for Sustainable Agriculture," said James Zuiches, dean of the WSU College of Agriculture and Home Economics. "I only wish WSU had such an endowed chair to award to faculty of her caliber.
"Dr. Butler has been a leader in sustainable agriculture teaching, research, and extension programs both nationally and internationally. WSU is proud of the 22 years of contributions she has made in Washington and wishes her well in her new role."
Butler will join the ISU faculty in February 2000.
David Topel, dean of the ISU College of Agriculture said, "Her background in agricultural anthropology and rural sociology will help strengthen an already high-quality program in sustainable agriculture at Iowa State. She has a sincere interest in working directly with farmers and agricultural industries, particularly in relation to rural development in Iowa."
The Wallace Chair was established in 1997 and named for Henry A. Wallace, ISU alumnus and vice president under Franklin D. Roosevelt.
