University of California Economist to Speak at WSU
PULLMAN, Wash. -- Steve Blank, an extension economist at the University of California, Davis, will speak on "The End of Agriculture in the American Portfolio" at 3:30 p.m., Wednesday, October 11, in Todd Hall 130 on the Pullman campus.
The presentation, which is free and open to the public, will take part during the three-day WSU Cooperative Extension Conference 2000.
Blank, who wrote a book by the same name, maintains that the United States cannot afford to participate in high-risk, low-return industries like agriculture. In his book he says the end of U.S. agricultural production is part of an inevitable and natural process.
More than 350 Cooperative Extension faculty, staff and administrators from across the state are expected to attend the conference, which begins October 10.
Other speakers include WSU President V. Lane Rawlins, Lyla Houglum dean and director of the Oregon State University Extension Service, and Mike Tate, director of WSU Cooperative Extension.
The conference focus will be "Strengthening Our Connections." Keynote speaker will be Melanie Mills, the founder of Higher Ground, Inc., a training company that provides human resource development services through workshops and seminars.
