Three Inducted to 4-H Hall of Fame
PULLMAN, Wash. -- Three 4-H workers represent Kitsap County in the newly created Washington State 4-H Hall of Fame.
Inducted in ceremonies Oct. 18th in Ocean Shores were: Milly Eagan, 22486 Jefferson Point Road, Kingston; George Curtis, 709 Kitsap, Port Orchard, and the late Cora Ives, Bremerton.
Eagan has served as Kitsap County's State Fair Coordinator for 10 years. Previously, she served as the State 4-H Fair Manager. Eagan has donated savings bonds to the State Fashion Revue winner for many years and served on the State 4-H Fair Board. She participates in Forum activities, and supports the Washington State 4-H Foundation.
Curtis was an extension agent in King County and later moved to Grays Harbor County. During his time at Grays Harbor, George helped start the Panhandle 4-H Camp. Panhandle has gone on to be one of the premier 4-H camps in the state.
Ives was a long time adult volunteer in Kitsap County who realized the importance of training the 4-H Cooperative Extension staff to work with youth and adult volunteer leaders. When she died in 1970, she included a bequest to the Washington State 4-H Foundation for an endowment to be used for 4-H Cooperative Extension staff and faculty professional development. Many people have attended conferences or other professional development opportunities with funds from the Cora Ives Endowment.
Induction of the first one hundred people was announced at a State 4-H Forum in Ocean Shores. The hall of fame was created as part of the 4-H centennial celebration.
More than 93,500 Washington youths are enrolled in 4-H programs; over 20,300 are enrolled in 1,733 clubs. Another 73,000 participate in a variety of other 4-H activities, such as the school enrichment program, day camps and overnight camping.
More than 10,300 adult volunteers support 4-H, which is Washington State University Cooperative Extension's informal, educational program for today's young people. The program combines the cooperative efforts of youth, volunteer leaders, WSU faculty, federal, state, and local governments, and businesses.
