4-H'ers Get to Know Their Government

PUYALLUP, Wash. -- Up to 300 Washington teens will learn how journalists can impact politicians, legislation and public opinion at this year's 4-H Know Your Government Conference in Olympia, Feb. 20-21.

Kevin Wright, 4-H state program manager Washington State University Cooperative Extension, said teens will take on responsibilities of writers, reporters, researchers and photographers and see first hand how their journalistic style affects the way a story is told and how it influences decision makers and policy.

Thursday, Feb. 20, State Sen. Aaron Reardon, D-Everett, will address delegates at 6 p.m. followed by Seattle Post Intelligencer capitol correspondent Angela Galloway.

Friday, Feb. 21, at 3:30 p.m., delegates will hear from News Tribune political columnist Peter Callaghan, National Public Radio regional correspondent Tom Bance and Denny Heck, president and founder of TVW, an Olympia cable television station.

The event will be held at the West Coast Olympia Hotel. The 4-H Know Your Government Conference is a hands-on educational opportunity for youth ages 14 - 18. 4-H is the largest youth development organization in Washington State and nationwide. Over 80,000 youth participate in programs statewide in areas including leadership, service learning, the arts, science and technology.
